The use of medications has increased, and there is a greater risk of affecting other living beings and the environment through their use and excretion or improper disposal, such as in the sink, toilet, or garbage container. The consequences of this will occur mainly in countries with poor medication packaging management and wastage.
In the highlights of the article on the environmental impact of medication use1, it is important to highlight the multiple activities and actions that can be carried out in the field of pharmacy. Within these, it can be considered informing about the importance of adherence to the prescribed treatment and, with the delivery of the medication, offering information on how the medication is disposed of.
Global protocols are required for the management of waste and the destruction of medicines within an approach that includes educating the population about the importance of compliance, which this article includes, with reference, "informing and educating patients in rational use of medications and their correct disposal."
